The Deparrtment of Biology at Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in molecular biology to begin in Fall 2010.   We are seeking candidates with teaching and research expertise in molecular biology, and who have a broad range of interests in biology.  Possible areas of expertise include, but are not restricted to, microbiology, cell biology, plant biology, neurobiology, and other fields that use modern molecular biology approaches.

We seek candidates who are dedicated to becoming an excellent undergraduate teacher.  Courses could include introductory biology, non-majors electives, and advanced courses appropriate to the person’s expertise; teaching formats include lecture/discussion, seminar and laboratory courses.  The successful candidate will develop a vigorous independent research program that will involve undergraduate students during the academic year and summer and will complement existing faculty research areas (http://www.hmc.edu/bio).

Harvey Mudd College is a small and highly selective private undergraduate college of science, mathematics, and engineering. In their first two years, all Harvey Mudd students complete a core curriculum comprising courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics, as well as the humanities, social sciences and arts. Harvey Mudd is a member of the Claremont University Consortium (www.claremont.edu), which includes four other undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions. Claremont is about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

A Ph.D. is required and postdoctoral research experience is highly desirable.  Applicants should e-mail a cover letter, CV, statement of teaching experience and interests, and statement of research plans to Dr. Stephen Adolph (biology@hmc.edu), and arrange for three letters of reference to be mailed to Search Committee, Department of Biology, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711 (or via e-mail to biology@hmc.edu).  Review of applications will begin October 1, 2009, and continue until the position is filled.  Harvey Mudd College is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the recruitment of candidates historically underrepresented on college faculties.  Experience with or demonstrated ability to effectively teach students from diverse backgrounds will be considered among the criteria for appointment.

The Harvey Mudd College Chemistry Department invites applications for a Sabbatical Replacement two-year visiting position in physical chemistry for the 2010-2012 academic years. The successful candidate will in the course of two years teach classical thermodynamics and kinetics; group theory, quantum chemistry, and spectroscopy; physical chemistry laboratory; general chemistry; and general chemistry laboratory. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to involve students in original research. Excellent facilities for teaching and research are available, including state-of-the-art instrumentation (see www.chem.hmc.edu). A Ph.D. is required; postdoctoral experience is preferred but not required. Complete applications should include a curriculum vita, statement of your approach to and experience in teaching physical chemistry, an outline of research interests, and two letters of recommendation (preferably with at least one letter addressing your teaching ability).  Applications and letters of recommendation should be submitted electronically to Ms. Kimberly Young at kim_young@hmc.edu. Review of applications will begin on March 8, 2010, and will continue until the position is filled. Experience with or demonstrated ability to effectively teach students from diverse backgrounds will be considered among the criteria for appointment and should be addressed in the application. Harvey Mudd College is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the recruitment of candidates historically underrepresented on college faculties.

The Department of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in energy resources engineering.  Specifically, the college is seeking faculty with experience and knowledge in generating and utilizing energy in efficient and innovative ways. Applicant must have a Ph.D. in an engineering discipline or a closely related field and a commitment to teaching excellence in a broad, accredited undergraduate curriculum of design, systems, and engineering science. The appointment is intended to be at the assistant professor rank, although all highly qualified candidates will be considered. Teaching duties include teaching throughout the curriculum, supervising industrially sponsored projects in the Engineering Clinic Program, and developing and teaching courses in the applicant’s specialty.  The successful applicant will be expected to develop new course offerings in energy resources engineering for 1st and 2nd year students enrolled at the Claremont Colleges.

Submit cover letter, CV, personal statement of teaching philosophy and research interests, and names of three references to Professor Patrick Little, Energy Resources Engineering Search Committee Chair, Department of Engineering, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711; hmc-energy-eng@sakai.claremont.edu.  The search committee will begin reviewing applications on December 15, 2009.  Harvey Mudd College is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the recruitment of candidates historically underrepresented on college faculties.  Demonstrated ability to teach students from diverse backgrounds will be considered among the criteria for appointment.

The Department of Physics of Harvey Mudd College, one of the Claremont Colleges, has an opening for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, beginning September 2010.  In exceptional circumstances a more senior appointment may be considered.  The department (http://www.physics.hmc.edu) has twelve full-time members; we graduate approximately twenty physics majors each year.  We seek an experimental physicist with broad intellectual interests who can excel at teaching outstanding undergraduates.  The successful candidate must be able to involve undergraduates in an active research program.  Current areas of research in the department include atomic physics, theoretical astrophysics and observational astronomy, biophysics, energy and the environment, geophysics, quantum and nonlinear optics, condensed matter physics, and experimental and theoretical particle physics, including string theory.  We are interested in a candidate who can either complement one of our existing areas of research or establish a new research area.  For full consideration, applications should be received by December 10, 2009, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.  On-campus interviews will include both teaching an upper-division physics class and presenting a research colloquium.  Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching experience and interests, a statement of research interests that describes how undergraduates could be involved in this research, and the names and addresses (including email) of three references to Professor John S. Townsend, Chair, Department of Physics, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711.
