Wireless at HMC
Choosing a Wireless Card The Claremont Colleges' CINE wireless network uses the 802.11b standard. Most standard consumer wireless cards support 802.11b. However, we have tested cards from the following vendors:
- Lucent/Orinoco
- LinkSys
- Cisco
- Apple
- D-Link
Cards from these venders have been found to work fine on our network.
Registering your Card
In order to access the Internet, your wireless card must be registered. To register your wireless card, Click Here and fill out the online form. Registering your card may take up to 2 business days, but is normally much faster. You will not recieve confirmation that your request has been filled - the card will just start working. You will need to know the MAC address (Hardware or physical address) of your wireless card. Under Windows, you can retrieve this information by typing ipconfig /all at a command prompt; make sure to use the Physical Address listed under Wireless and not under Local Area Connection.
Network Configuration
- Set your wireless network connection's IP configuration (TCP-IP/properties under Windows) to use DHCP, or "Get Address from Server". Your network settings will be assigned automatically.
- Use the wireless client program to set mode to 'Infrastructure' or 'Any' (In Windows XP, select the 'Wireless Networks' tab under the network connection properties, and choose 'Advanced') - the default setting is usually 'Any').
- Use the wireless client program to set SSID to 'ANY' or 'CINE' (In Windows XP, a list of available networks is displayed under the 'Wireless Networks' tab).
Troubleshooting
- If you have an internal wireless card, make sure your card is on. Some computers begin with the internal wireless card turned off. Consult your computer's user manual to determine how to turn your card on or off.
