Using FTP to connect to Charlie and Alice

To connect to Charlie from a PC in your dorm room, simply open an Explorer window (by opening My Computer or by opening an Internet Explorer browser window) and type \\charlie.ac.hmc.edu. To reach your home directory, type \\charlie.ac.hmc.edu\HMC_YOURYEAR\username\ where YOURYEAR is your full graduation year (for example, 2005), and username is your Charlie username, for example jsmith.

To connect to Charlie from windows 2000/xp in your dorm room:

Go to control pannel and user accounts.
Make sure that you have an account with the same username and password as your Charlie account.
In the run portion of your start menu, type : \\charlie.ac.hmc.edu

To connect to Charlie from a Mac in your dorm room:

The MicroSoft UAM (authentication management software) must be installed.
This software can be obtained here. You must be logged into the mac as an administrator to install.
Go to the Go menu in the top bar of the screen and click it.
Select Connect to Server....
In the Server Address text box, type: afp://charlie.ac.hmc.edu (Another possibility is typing: smb://charlie.ac.hmc.edu. However, just as a note, the smb protocol does not fully support all MAC file formats. For example the '.sea' format)
Click Connect.

What is FTP?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a standard that allows you to transfer files between your computer and an FTP server (such as odin). In order to use FTP you must install an FTP client on your computer.

Using FTP on a PC

There are many FTP clients (programs that connect to servers using the FTP protocol) available for Microsoft Windows.

WS_FTP is a widely used ftp client, and is a favorite for many.
FileZilla is a more modern open source alternative that provides additional functionality for free.

How to use WS_FTP

Start WS_FTP LE. If it is not installed, see "How to get WS_FTP".
In the dialog box that appears, type the server name you want to connect to (for example, odin.ac.hmc.edu) as the Host Name and then enter your User Name and Password.
If you want to transfer to and from your folder on Charlie, click on the Startup tab and under Initial Local Folder: specify \\charlie.hmc.edu\HMC_200?\username (Note: the question mark corresponds to whichever class the user is in). You can also specify an initial Remote Site Folder (Odin), but this is optional. Click OK.
The window that appears is divided into two sections vertically with the left section representing your local computer and the right, the remote host (Odin). Change directories on the local computer by Clicking on ChgDir. The program should start with the local directory being the H:\ drive (your home folder on Charlie).
To transfer a file from the remote host (Odin) to your local computer, select the file you want to transfer in the right (Odin) part of the window and click the <- button.
To transfer a file from the local computer to the remote host (Odin) select the file you want to transfer in the left (local) window and click the -> button.
When you're done click Close and Exit the program.

How to get WS_FTP

The lab computers should have WS_FTP installed. If you are not in the labs you may need to download WS_FTP. The Home version is available for free.

FileZilla

How to use FileZilla

If FileZilla is already installed, Start FileZilla. Otherwise, install it first. See "How to Get FileZilla" for more details.
In the Quickconnect taskbar at the top, enter your server, username, and password. If you are connecting to Odin (the student mail server), you enter odin.ac.hmc.edu for the server name. Then click the Quickconnect button on the right.
If you connected to Odin successfully, the explorer-like window on the right will now show the folders on Odin, starting in your home directory.
The left window shows the files on the computer you are on. You can drag files between these two windows to tranfer them, or you can right click on a file to see a list of actions you can perform.
When you are finished transfering files, be sure to disconnect from Odin by either exiting the program or choosing Disconnect from the file menu.

How to get FileZilla

FileZilla is available free of charge, licensed under the GPL. You can find more information and links to download locations at its website.

Using FTP on a Macintosh

The choice of FTP client on a Macintosh computer depends on what OS you are using.

OS 9: Fetch is an FTP client for OS X, Mac OS 9 and earlier.
OS X: Fugu is an free FTP client for Mac OS X.

Fetch

How to use Fetch

Launch Fetch by selecting the alias for Fetch from the Charlie Applications menu item in the Apple menu.
In the dialog box that appears, enter the remote host (such as Odin), or select one from the shortcuts menu. Enter your User ID and Password in the appropriate fields. You can also specify a directory on the remote host if you like, but this is optional. Click OK.
Another dialog box will appear with a window displaying all of your directories and files in your home directory on Odin. Directories are displayed as folders. You can change directories by double-clicking on the folder.
To transfer a file from the remote host to your personal computer select the file you want to transfer by single-clicking on it. Click the Get File... button. If you want to transfer a whole directory, first select the directory by single clicking on it and then select Get Directories and Files... from the Remote menu. Another dialog box will appear asking where you want to save the file(s). Choose the location you would like to save the files to, and click Save.
You can also drag files from the Fetch window into the folder that you'd like to copy them to.
To transfer a file from your personal computer to a remote host, first select the directory on the remote host that you want to save the file to by double-clicking on it to open it. Then click the Put File... button. A file dialog box will appear. Select the file you want to transfer from your Home directory and click OK. If you want to transfer a directory select Put Directories and Files.. from the Remote menu and then select the folder you want to transfer in the dialog box that appears.
You can also copy files by dragging them from their folder into the fetch window.
When you're finished click Close Connection and then quit Fetch.

Fetch can be downloaded from the Fetch Softworks website.

Fugu

How to use Fugu

Launch Fugu if it is installed. If it is not yet installed, see How to get Fugu.
In the Connect to: box, enter the server you would like to connect to (odin.ac.hmc.edu). In the Username: box, enter your username. Click Connect.
Enter your password when prompted.
You will now be presented with a Finder-like window on the right that represents the host you are connected to (odin), and another Finder-like window on the left that represents your personal computer. To use Fugu, you move files and folders just like you would with the Finder. You can drag and drop, copy and paste, and navigate to any location you have permission to access.
When you are finished, be sure to disconnect by clicking the disconnect icon or by selecting disconnect from the menu.

How to get Fugu

Fugu can be downloaded freely from its website at the University of Michigan. You can run Fugu directly from the disk image (.dmg) by double clicking on the disk image to mount it, and launching fugu from the mounted image. To install Fugu, drag the icon from the disk image to the location you would like it installed to (the applications folder, for example).
