HMC Computing and Information Services Mission Statement

The goal for computing at HMC is to support the academic program by providing convenient access to excellent computing facilities for instruction, clinic, and research, and by providing professional and student staff adequate to maintain those facilities competently and offer excellent service to their users.

As simulation and visualization become ever more important in solving larger and more complex problems in engineering, mathematics, and science, and as computing offers more relevant assistance in the Humanities and Social Sciences, computer resources become ever more crucial in the quality of our educational program. Excellent facilities must be evaluated in three areas:

1. a friendly, stalwart environment for general computing,
2. advanced discipline-related computing directed to upper division courses,
3. adequate research and design opportunities for faculty.

In this mission statement excellent means compatible with the excellence we seek in education. We can best achieve the desired level of excellence by emphasizing in our planning convenient access to a variety of resources through a central network and strategic allocation of those resources managed by a well trained professional staff.
