HMC
Outstanding Alumni Awards

HMC’s Alumni Association takes pride in recognizing its outstanding alumni who have made significant contributions to humanity and society in areas of community service, global contribution, and science and technology.

To qualify, contributions should demonstrate a high level of sustained commitment and involve considerable personal sacrifice. The size of the group affected does not matter, but the contribution must make a positive impact on humanity or society—reaching an organization, community or individual. We don’t mind if the nominee has already been recognized by an independent organization or received other honors or awards.

Outstanding Alumni Awards 2007
This year the Alumni Association Board of Governors will award two worthy individuals, Frank Cummings ’62 and Robert Kelley ’67, the Outstanding Alumni Award.  These awards will be presented on Saturday, April 28, 2007, during Alumni Weekend.

Frank CummingsFrank Cummings '62 has dedicated a major portion of his life to providing service to humanity and has made continued, lengthy and substantial personal sacrifices while doing so.  In the 60’s Cummings taught at Clark College, a predominantly African-American college located in the Southern United States. This was a controversial period in the educational system, following the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision, and America was wrestling with ways to create equal educational opportunities for all. Cummings decided to get involved and to actively become a part of the solution. Cummings continued to get involved and provide leadership in programs to improve the conditions of disadvantaged people.

While working with the Child Survival Project, Cummings managed the technical assistance contract for a USAID funded maternal and child health project for the Ministry of Health in Egypt. He currently resides in Central America where he is involved in projects to improve the economic and social status of people in El Salvador. His commitment to providing service to mankind exemplifies the characteristics this award was created to recognize. Comments from Cummings.

Robert and Kathleen KelleyRobert Kelley '67 (pictured with his wife Kathleen) has spent most of his career managing programs to monitor nuclear systems and handle nuclear materials to ensure safety. This includes programs to utilize isotopes in medicine and research, as well as isotopes that can be used in weapons. He has been involved in several programs to monitor nuclear weapons programs in foreign countries, including Iraq and South Africa, to ensure these materials will not be used for aggression.

Kelley is highly respected by experts in the field of anti-nuclear proliferation and his work is frequently cited in research and position papers on this topic. Kelley was chosen for this award for his significant service to humanity and efforts to make the world a safer place through his oversight. Along with fellow members of the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Kelley was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. He is the second HMC alumnus to be part of a team recognized for its work with the Nobel Prize. Kirk Jones '84 was a field coordinator for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) when the organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.
