Whenever possible, high school students who seek advanced placement and credit at Harvey Mudd College are encouraged to take appropriate AP examinations offered each spring by the College Board or to forward their International Baccalaureate scores. It is important to note that while a number of students will have advanced placement, most first-year students will be enrolled in the standard sequence of courses: Chemistry 21 and 25, Computer Science 5, Introduction to Humanities and Social Sciences 1, Math 11 and 12, and Physics 23.
Placement exams are also offered by HMC’s academic departments in the fall before classes start. Most students, however, will find that they have forgotten some material over the summer and may need to review previous studies in order to pass the relevant HMC placement examinations.
